I’ve started to think a little more positively today. I’m marking this possible change of ground state with a post, to highlight the things that might keep me on track for a while. Hacking a Roguelike I am definitely a video game enthusiast. I will never identify as a “Gamer” because that implies a culture I do not like. But I love games, and I love the way, like with electronic music, the classification of games has become a cult all to itself.
Since I adopted the approach, back in the 90s, I’ve always thought of myself treading fairly lightly and always ready to be picked up by the rising tide and put down someplace else. The notion being, when I get there I’ll know. I think I floated right past the habitable zone.
A Note on Careers, Jobs, Vocations and Hobbies A co-worker asked me the following question when I told him that I was giving up on my current attempt at employment: btw which kinds of jobs have you enjoyed in the past? I found myself quite unable to formulate a non-glib response. That’s kind of funny of course, but it’s a very deep question and one I should probably ask myself. So here I am.
Why is nobody blowing up pipelines? I started reading the Andreas Malm book, mis-titled “How to Blow Up a Pipeline”, and though I got stuck on the simpleton’s definition of “moral pacifism” (clearly a straw man) I agree in principle with the argument that it is time for a new approach. So why is it? There are maps of pipelines on the internet, and there are hundreds of thousands of miles of them; a more gentle form of sabotage should be totally viable.
Taxes and Death, or Your Work Ethic Is Killing Us All This started as a rant while I was writing to my accountant about something stupid. I kept it in the form of a monologue directed at him because ¯_(ツ)_/¯ why not. Apologies to folks who find finance and accounting fascinating - I think your skills could be used for good, it’s just a matter of recovery. Honestly I don’t mind paying taxes AT ALL, it’s all this attention demanding bullshit and subterfuge that no-one (who doesn’t want to) should ever waste precious time and consciousness on.
